Energy reform in Mexico

In December 2013, the energy reform in Mexico was declared constitutional, therefore, a new commercial and participation scheme was added to the electricity generation market in the country. The main objective of this reform is to reduce the costs of electricity production and raise the productivity in conjunction with the efficiency of the National Electricity System.

Law of the Electricity Industry

In 2014, the Law of the Electricity Industry and it´s regulations were approved by the local congress. Those documents came up from the Mexican Energy Reform, these laws guarantee the respect for the sociocultural elements of the communities related to power generation projects through the Social Impact Assessment. This study is necessary in order to implement relevant actions to ensure the sustainability of the project and respect for human rights during it's useful life.

Energía Limpia de Amistad

The project developed by SOWITEC called "Energía Limpia de Amistad" was sold to Enel Green Power Mexico in July 2016. On November 2018, the operation phase started. The wind farm will have an installed capacity of 200 MW and will generate more than 750 GWh each year.

Parque Eólico El Mezquite

The project developed by SOWITEC called "Parque Eólico El Mezquite" was sold to Santander Capital Structuring in July 2014. On September 2017, the construction phase started. The project will have an installed capacity between 200 and 250 MW. The project has a power purchase agreement with Federal Electricity Commission of Basic Supply for 15 years.

The project "Parque Eolico El Mezquite" is in the construction stage, this project is in Nuevo Leon State and it will be in operation on 2019. The information was provided by the local authorities and "Cubico Sustainable Investments" Company.

Environment and communities

Renewable energies have increased in popularity and they have decreased their production cost. In Mexico, the renewable energies, nuclear and the efficient cogeneration are known as "clean energies", due to the low carbon footprint that they produced versus other sources of energy generation. Currently, the main sources of renewable energy generation are geothermal, wind, solar and biomass. In terms of installed capacity in Mexico, the states of Oaxaca and Tamaulipas have the largest installed capacity of wind projects. On the other hand, Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango are the Mexican states with the most large-scale photovoltaic parks. SOWITEC Mexico contributes constantly to the development of a more sustainable energy matrix, taking in to consideration the conditions as technical, economic, social and environmental, which are directly related with the viability of the project. With this, SOWITEC Mexico is aligned with the main aims of structural reforms regarding energetic issues, contributing with its experience, quality and performance.

SOWITEC is committed to develop sustainable projects, fulfilling with national and international standards. SOWITEC has an interdisciplinary team that carries out flora and fauna studies and use the best available methodologies and techniques. Additionally, SOWITEC has a responsibility with the communities with influence for the development of the project, so it carries out the social impact assessment in accordance with the guidelines established by the Secretary of Energy and works under the Electricity Industry Law regulation.
